VOTW - CNN - Richard Gere Comments on Tibet-Beijing Protests

Don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not a big Richard Gere fan. I do however feel that it is important to recognize the plight of the people of Tibet through the years of opression under Chinese rule.

It isimportant that we keep our eyes on what is going on in China right now. With the Olympics set to start on August 8th, the Chinese government will be looking to end these protests quickly in order to turn the world’s focus toward the Olympic games and portray Beijing as a safe place to visit. Their anxiousness to make this happen has already resulted in several deaths to Tibetians, which raises concern that the violence has only just begun.

Update - As of this morning the death toll of protesting Tibetians in China has reached 16 with hundreds more injured.

This should have an interesting effect on the world’s perception of Beijing as a safe place to visit for the Olympics, which are just 5 months away.
