The article was excellent. However, the research did fail to address a number of important issues both ecomonic and security. The question must be asked what is the cost of peace, or security in our homeland. It is a fact that if we weren't occupying time of terrorist in Iraq they would be intent on causing havoc and terror in our backyard. Example, explosions in stadiums or malls would become more and more prevalent. This is true terror that would stiffle our economy in 10 days much worse than a year in Iraq. Further, the cost of oil is dragging billions of dollars from our economy every week, much more than the cost of the war. So, the real problem is that we in US have to buy oil on the free market from those who control the Oil Cartels. Since we are in Iraq we need to use oil to negotiate a better price for our consumers which is causing inflation of everything hauled in a semi truck, and friends that is everything.
Next, let's look at the potential of democracy in the middle east. The lone State of freedom is Israel. Some others at least look democratic, like Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan. We need democracies to build their economies so we don't have to send aid. We send aid to bolster thier economies so everyone on the planet doesn't come to the U.S. Immigration is the last point of contention. Our aid and assistance policies even as good as we are to Mexico hasn't stopped illegal immigration. The Mexican economy is so poor no matter what we give the power brokers steal it and the people get nothing. So proverty drives them over the boarder so they can feed their families. With an improved economy in Mexico they wouldn't come here. So, NAFTA and other agreements have benefited Mexico and other Latin American countries. Sure, we have suffered during the transition from a manufactoring based economy to a more serviced based economy. I don't necessary agree that is a good thing but we shall leave that for another time.
Fact is we have to send aid and we have to assist freedom loving people around the world to enjoy freedom (if they want it) while not acting as the World's police. We should and do help when we can. It's economically sound to invest in those efforts. We open up trade and other exchanges with free countries so the benefits always outweigh the costs.
