Managing Workload through Distractions and General Efficiency Killers
- 2 Comment
There is no doubt that my ability to consistently publish quality (yes, a relative term) content to this blog has been severely compromised by my relocation and all of the other distractions that have come my way in recent months.
At this point I really don’t have a legitimate excuse to stand behind, other than lazy blogging habits. I’m online almost every day of the week and some weeks, like many of you, I’m at it every day.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it is summer time and our new Urban-Floridian lifestyle presents us with so many options for getting out of the house and finding interesting ways to entertain ourselves. I know it isn’t that I’ve lost interest in what I’m doing because I come across ideas for new articles in just about everything that I do. I should probably figure out a simple and convenient way to capture those ideas at the moment they cross my minds so they are not forgotten and never published.
I have found that with the telecommuting agreement that I’ve arranged with my employer, which is what allowed me to move to FL and keep my job, I am working longer hours and concentrating more intensely on producing quality results across the projects that I’m involved in. This has definitely had an adverse impact on my ability to find time during normal business hours to focus and compile my thoughts in a way that would adequately allow me to communicate the things I’m looking to share with Jcyreus dot Com readers.
What leaves me frustrated with myself and feeling as though I have become somewhat “lazy” is that when I was forced to dedicate a few hours each evening to completing a task, as with when I was studying for my MS degree, I was able to make it happen. Realistically, the pace that I was working at while studying for those 2 years was not sustainable in light of my personal commitments to family and home life.
The past 2 weeks have been brutal for me in terms of trying to stay productive while keeping up with all of the places I committed myself to visit this month. As I write this, I’m sitting in a Birmingham (AL) Panera and getting anxious about the fact that I’ve got a ton of things to catch up on as a result of last week’s adventure up and back from Milwaukee.
At least I’ll be able to rest assured for the next 12 hours or so knowing that I took a little time to feed the [content] beast this morning in the hopes that my loyal subscribers haven’t given up on me yet.

@MadLadyB - If I could have made time to see any of you I would have…you know that. I flew in on Tues and worked until 1am, then got up early on Wed, put in a full day, left the office to grab some dinner and was in bed by around 7pm. Thursday morning I went into the ofc for a few hrs then it was off to the airport.
I hope everything goes as well as possible for you this weekend. We wish we could be there to celebrate your marriage with you.
